My 2013 Oscar Predictions

Tonight is the biggest night in Hollywood as stars converge in Kodak Theater for the 85th Academy Awards. Last year was a very good year in films and the battle for tonight would validate the selected few who will get to win the Oscars and have their name written in the Oscar history book. With that being said, the competition is as stiff as last year when Meryl Streep and Viola Davis battled it out for the Best Actress category with the former winning her third statuette.

As for this year, like what I’ve been doing for the last couple of years – I’d be presenting my predictions / thoughts in certain categories with the THINK  and WANT format or Think / Want / Should Win format or Winner / Spoiler blah blah.
Here they are…

Best Picture
THINK / WANT / SHOULD - Argo is arguably the one to beat tonight with its unprecedented accolades left and right. The Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild and the BAFTA hailed it as their Best Picture and I cannot imagine the Academy not following through and not recognizing the film despite the controversial snub of its director Ben Affleck.

SPOILER: If the Academy will snub this film just to be different, the award may go to Lincoln or Life Of Pi.

Best Director
With Ben Affleck getting no love from the Academy, I’ve this feeling that the Oscar will go to either Steven Spielberg or Ang Lee – both are previous winners. With this, I think it’ll be Steven Spielberg simply because I kinda think that (on a personal level) Spielberg’s direction was much better than the Life Of Pi of Ang Lee.

SPOILER: Ang Lee for Life Of Pi

Best Actor (LOCKED)
Think / Want / Should / No Spoiler: British actor Daniel Day Lewis is one of the favorites of the Academy having won two Oscars already. With his beyond impressive portrayal of Abe Lincoln, DDL could easily walk away with his third win – a well deserved win at that.

Best Actress
Now this is one of the most awaited categories of the night. Everybody thought Jennifer Lawrence had this already in the bag until Emmanuelle Riva’s name pops in and even snatching the BAFTA from JLaw. This could be a very interesting upset if the Silver Linings Playbook actress will go home empty handed after tonight.

THINK: Jennifer Lawrence – given the that American voters dominates the Academy, I should think that JLaw will get this.

WANT and SHOULD  /SPOILER: Emmanuelle Riva – her moving portrayal in Amour is beyond. This is her first nomination and was touted to be the oldest to get the nod for this category. Not for sentimental reason because Miss Riva’s 86 but because I believe that she actually deserved it more than Jennifer.

Best Supporting Actress (LOCKED)

No one – as in no one can beat Anne Hathaway tonight. Her portrayal of the ever so distraught Fantine in Les Misérables is perfection. The dynamic of her emotions as she sings the theme of the song has sealed her Oscar destiny. It’ll be such a shocker if Sally Field would snatch this one from her.

Best Supporting Actor

You cannot go wrong with Christoph Waltz when it comes to being cynical and all and Tommy Lee Jones have proven her worth a long time ago. I should think that it’s only between them and I’m betting towards Waltz winning this. Atleast I think the Academy have voted for him

SPOILER: Tommy Lee Jones for Lincoln

Best Original Screenplay

Think / Want / Should – Amour

Best Writing Adapted Screnplay
Think / Want  - Lincoln
Should – Argo

Best Animated Feature
Think / Should / Want – Brave

Best Editing
Think/ Should/ Want – Argo

Best Original Score
Think/ Should/ Want – Life Of Pi

Best Original Song
Think/ Should / Want  - Adele for Skyfall

Best Visual Effects
Think/ Should/ Want – Life Of Pi

Best Foreign Film
Think/ Should/ Want – Amour

Best Production Design
Think/ Should/ Want – Les Miserables

I have not watched the short film / documentary categories so I opted to leave them alone! I hope the deserving winners would win tonight! ‘till next year!

My 2012 Oscar Predictions

As per tradition (that started last year – lol), I am again naming my picks for this year’s Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars. A lot of good movies last year and a lot of fantastic performances, but only one per category stood out!

Here is my prediction for this coming Sunday event!

BEST PICTURE

Okay, I have to give it to The Artist –  I’m basing my prediction not because I love the film but because of all the precursors.

SPOILER: The Tree Of Life

BEST DIRECTOR

I have to give it to Martin Scorsese for the genius that is Hugo. I would’ve wanted Hugo to take home the Best Picture, but it’s not in contention or at least in the Top3, I think, out of all the nominees.

SPOILER: Michel Hazanavicius for The Artist

BEST ACTOR

Now, here’s the tricky part. We have two front-runners. First, George Clooney was touted to get the nod for his role in the Descendants early in the game, but feisty actor Jean Dujardin suddenly gained momentum when he bagged the top prize at the Screen Actors Guild and the BAFTA. With that being said, though, I’d still think George will get this one.

SPOILER: Jean Dujardin for The Artist

BEST ACTRESS

Meryl Streep and Viola Davis are head to head on this one, with Streep winning the Globes and the BAFTA and Davis winning the SAG. As much as I love Viola, I still think Meryl’s 3rd Oscar is long overdue for this yet another exemplary performance as the iron lady, Margaret Thatcher.

SPOILER: Viola Davis for The Help

LOCKED: Octavia Spencer for The Help and Christopher Plummer for The Beginners – nominated for Best Actress and Actor in a Supporting Role.

SPOILER: None.

TECHNICAL CATEGORIES:

Best Original Screenplay – The Artist

Best Adapted Screenplay – Hugo

Best Animated Feature – Kung Fu Panda 2

Best Foreign Language Film – A Separation

Best Documentary Feature – Undefeated

Best Documentary Short Subject – Incident in New Baghdad

Best Live Action Short Film – Raju

Best Animated Short Film – Wild Life

My 2011 Oscar Predictions

The Academy Awards also known as the Oscar is the last but the most prestigious award giving bodies that every movie fans like me are excited about during the award season in the US. So for this post, I'll be making my predictions and some commentaries about my choices for the 83rd Academy Awards --whom I think will win and whom I want to win.

(Selected Awards only)

Best Picture
Think and Want: The King's Speech - I was initially skeptical with this film winning the Oscar's after The Social Network had the industry buzzing about its front runner status in the said category but after SAG and BAFTA declaring it their best film, that status shifted positively to this British film. It's definitely my favorite! Colin Firth's stutter and Helena's accent got me!

Best Director
Think: David Fincher -Golden Globes, BAFTA and SAG said so
Want: Tom Hooper - I, most of the time believe that if a movie won the Best Picture -the director should get 60% of the credits and since my best picture is The King's Speech, my winner is from this film as well --atleast, that's what I want to happen. haha

Best Actress
Think: Natalie Portman - As much as I like (LOVE!) her, I think Annette should get this but apparently, Natalie's time has arrived. Sometimes, timing plays a very important part on choosing who's going to win. Look at Sandra winning last year over Meryl Streep.
Want: Annette Bening - She just can't get a break. First, losing to Hilary Swank and this. I'd be so damn happy if she'd get her first Oscar-- please Academy, give where the credit is due!

Best Actor
Think and Want: Colin Firth - please, give it to Colin this time. He was so robbed last year and his performance was way above his competition!

Best Supporting Actor
Think and Want: Christian Bale - he's superb in The Fighter and he should get that statuette on February 27!!

Best Supporting Actress
Think: Melissa Leo -Like Natalie Portman, her moment has arrived. I do think though that she "kinda" deserved this award after losing quite a number of times. Haha
Want: Helena Bonham Carter - she's just my sentimental favorite!!

Best Animated Film
Think: Toy Story 3 - this is stupid, you'd nominate an animated film in the Best Picture Category and Best Animated Film at the same time? They should just give the award right away to this film for the Animated Film Category, like seriously???
Want: As much as I was touched by Toy Story 3, my favorite would have to be How To Train Your Dragon which was the first film I've given a 10/10 ratings.

Best Original Song
Think: I See The Light - from Tangled
Want: If I Rise - 127 Hours

Best Make Up
Think: Barney's Version
Want: The Wolfman

Best Art Direction
Think and Want: Inception

Best Costume Design
Think and Want: Alice In Wonderland
Best Adapted Screenplay
Think: The Social Network
Want: 127 Hours
