The Kids Are All Right Film Review

On DVD.

Director: Lisa Cholodenko

Annette Bening

Julianne Moore

Mark Ruffalo

Mia Wasikowska

Josh Hutcherson

The Kids Are All Right has got to win something at the Oscars. This was my first reaction immediately after watching the film on DVD. It goes to show that you don’t really need to spend millions to create something as refreshing and as grandiose (story-wise) as this film. It is definitely a very, very good watch. It’s fresh, raw and very well acted.

Plot: Nic (Bening) and Jules (Moore) are lesbian couple who have each given birth to a child using the same sperm donor. Their youngest child Laser (Josh Hutcherson) was eager to meet his sperm donor Father but was very young to contact the facility so he asked his 18-year old sis Joni (Mia Wasikowska) to make the call and have them meet their biological father Paul played by Mark Ruffalo. The meeting went well and that’s the beginning of Paul’s entrance to the family.

Jules have a landscaping businnes and Paul asks her to landscape his garden. Jules immediately said yes but Nic thinks that it's not a very good idea since they are initially uncomfortable with the idea of Paul spending time with the kids. While doing the work at Paul's garden, Jules was very thankful and suddenly kissed Paul which end up in bed and they begin to have an affair.

At the dinner in Paul's house, Nic discovered the affair when she found Jule's hair in Paul's bathroom and bed. She confronted Jules and regretfully admits the affair. Nic was distraught so as the kid who are angry at Paul and Nic.

Jules eventually addressed her family and begs for forgiveness. Joni went to college and Laser told his Mom's not to break up because they're too old. Both giggles at Laser's comments and the film ended showing them smiling at each other.

The dinner at Paul's house would have to be one of my favorite scenes in the film! Annet Benning has got to win the Oscars! She is FANTASTIC! While watching this film, I am a little bit embarrassed by Nic’s actuation –it was just amazing! I cried when Jules had her speech in front of the family apologizing, explaining marriage and all! With the line“Sometimes you hurt the one you love the most” which is indeed true. The whole ensemble was great except for Mark Ruffalo’s who’s presence I didn’t feel that much. I find no depth at all –or am I supposed to look for one? LOL.

I’d give this a 9.5/10 ratings.

A Serbian Film Review

"Srpski film"

Director: Srđan Spasojević

Starring: Sergej Trifunović, Srđan Todorović

I wasn't aware of this film until recently when I discovered it from a forum where I am a very active poster. It just pique my curiousity because according to some posters, it was one of the most disturbing films they've ever seen. I'm like, more disturbing than Gigli (?) hahaha. When I read its synopsis in IMDb, I immediately felt sick but I was still interested to watch it. I downloaded the movie from the net and watched it right away.

Watching it could get a bit draggy if not for the gory scenes depicted each time I blink my eyes. It's beyond gory to be honest. The torture sex scene, the baby scene, the rape are beyond comprehension. It is an intelligent film if you go beyond its visuals. From where it was filmed, you could easily tell that it's beyond art that pushes this film to be as fantastic as it is --that is -- concept wise.

(a screencap of probably the most heart wrenching and disturbing scene in the film history)

Is it disturbing? Yes. Is it too gory to watch? Yes. Is it worth your time? Yes. Watch it, you'd actually enjoy it. Savor the experience. Feel the pain, feel it's tragic storyline, after-which-- you'll never be the same again.

Paranormal Activity 2 Film Review

Trinoma Mall
Nov.7, 2010
P160 with Dee.

Director: Tod Williams
Starring
Katie Featherston
Micah Sloat
Brian Boland
Sprague Grayden
Molly Ephraim
Tim Clemens

I wasn't really planning to watch this film last night but I got curious with its trailer. I don't find the first one scary at all and I'd like to know if this one's actually better than the first one. Well, I'd say the scenes are better which are more subtle yet creepier. The film's actually about Katie's (the protagonist from the first film) sister who is also terrorized by the demon (apparently because of her first born male) --it's a good premise. Lots of startling scenes and the actors are actually --well, good.

I'd give it an 8.5/10 ratings.

Eat, Pray, Love Film Review

Gateway Cineplex 3
October 09, 2010
with Malcolm

Director: Ryan Murphy
Starring: Julia Roberts, Billy Crudup, James Franco, Javier Bardem, Viola Davis, Richard Jenkins, Christine Hakim

It was after the Oscar this year when I found out that Julia Roberts will have another film (other than Valentine's Day -where she shared the screen with practically everyone in Hollywood) for which she top-billed the role of the writer Elizabeth Gilbert who wrote the book where the movie was based. I've been waiting for this film for like forever and It was only shown here two months after it's release in the States.

Was it worth the wait? I'd say Yes because Julia is simply one of my favorite actresses and seeing her being "Julia" again even though she's playing a real life character makes me love her even more. The film was engaging and funny at times--not very moving at all but it would make you think something about life. About freedom, choices --what exactly do you want to do in life?

My only problem with this film was that it tends to be a bit draggy. It was 2 hours and 22 minutes long and I'm like --Okay, so when does she go to India? My favorite part would have to be her Italian escapade. It makes me want to go to Rome --and seriously, I HAVE TO GO TO ITALY!

James Franco was very charming as usual but I did not really connect with his character while Javier Bardem on the otherhand was such a darling to watch!

I'd probably recommend this film to people who loves watching long "Julia Robert" films --I'm not expecting too much from this film because I really haven't read the book (which I ought to do soon) --but I'd say I really did enjoy it --it was really a feel good film.

Who's Playing Renesmee Cullen?

Young Actress Mackenzie Foy is said to play the half-human half-vampire child of Edward Cullen and Bella Swan of Twilight Saga's fourth installment, the Breaking Dawn. I kinda like this girl's look--pale and cute. She's good enough for me to play Renesmee Cullen. As a Twilight Saga fan, I'm pretty excited to see where Director Bill Condon would cut this first part of the saga's last installment. I hope he'd cut it after Bella gives birth to Renesmee. :)

Here's my Renesmee interpretation using Mackenzie's pic.

Updated

Apparently there will be five young actresses that will play the half-vampire, half-human child of Edward and Bella named Renesmee that we’re going to see on the second part of the last installment of the Breaking Dawn that will be shown November of next year.

MacKenzie Foy will be the first Renesmee and she will have Rachel St. Gelais, Sierra Pitkin, Eliza Faria and Christie Burke as Renesmee in stages of her accelerated growth.

I apologize for my poor editing skills J

Charlie St.Cloud Film Review

with Malcolm.

Directed by Burr Steers
based on the novel of Ben Sherwood (novel)

Starring
Starring
Zac Efron
Kim Basinger
Ray Liotta
Amanda Crew
Charlie Tahan

I was once again lucky enough to get invites to a red carpet premiere of a film, this time for Charlie St.Cloud starring Zac Efron which will have a wide release on September 29. I was quite surprised with how Zac Efron matured as an actor. I'd say I'm very much impressed with his Charlie St.Cloud persona where you could easily feel his pain for losing his brother.

Charlie Tahan who played his kid brother Sam was very good as well. The over-all presentation of the film was good. Nice sceneries, very melancholic, great camera shots though, it's a bit predictable because I easily pointed out to my friend during the film that Tess (his love interest)

I would give a good recommendation for the film not because it is that great but because it is a feel good film which will make you realize that "sometimes we have to let go of some things in order for us to move on" and how people are getting second chances for a reason.

I'll give it a 7.5/10 ratings.

P270.00

Directed by Zac Snyder

Starring
Jim Sturgess
Geoffrey Rush
Emily Barclay
Anthony LaPaglia
David Wenham
Ryan Kwanten
Helen Mirren
Sam Neill
Hugo Weaving

I've high expectations for this film and I was just a bit disappointed with it's lack of excitement. I love that it's almost in full 3D and I enjoyed it visually but was ultimately let-down by the whole story. I can't find the 'spunk' that I saw in its trailer. Graphics are exemplary --the best thing about it is its musical score. It's not that bad of a film and I would consider watching it for the second time but I still won't enjoy it as much as my friend Malcolm did. The audience' consensus was like "It was just an OK film."

M. Night Shyamalan' Devil Film Review

Red Carpet Premiere
with Dominic

Director by John Erick Dowdle

Produced by M. Night Shyamalan, John Erick Dowdle, Drew Dowdle and Sam Mercer

Starring Chris Messina, Bojana Novakovic, Bokeem
Woodbine

I've got a couple of invites for the premiere night of "Devil," being the first of The Night Chronicles Trilogy by its producer Mr.Shyamalan. (thanks PEX) I wasn't expecting much for this film since I'm not really a big fan of this genre.

I find the whole film a bit stereotypical with the Devil taking advantage of one man's soul and the protagonist redeeming himself in the end --which eventually prevents the devil from taking his soul.

It was a bit draggy at the beginning and it just continue to build up by the time everyone in the audience have guessed who really the devil was with it's premise of five people being trapped inside an elevator and one of them is the Devil.

So Who is the Devil?

I'd give it a 6.5/10 ratings.

Just watch out for it on DVD.

Resident Evil: Afterlife Film Review

September 9, 2010
with D. P171.00

Director: Paul W. S. Anderson

Starring: Milla Jovovich, Ali Larter, Wentworth Miller, Kim Coates, Spencer Locke, Shawn Roberts, Boris Kodjoe

If not for Milla Jovovich, I wouldn't even give this 4th installment of Resident Evil any good credits --if there's even any. I was so disappointed that I started to think "What's 'effin happening to Hollywood?." Where are the good 'ol action/ horror/ thriller films? Where's the subtance of this film? Why the repetitive scenarios? Why the Matrix rip-off? Why Oh Why??????

It's just all too

And can I just add how comical it was to have Michael Scofield (ehem, I mean Wentworth Miller) to play Chris Redfield -- Claire's brother.

Two reasons to love this film: Milla Jovovich and Ali Larter.

Despicable Me Film Review

Gateway Cineplex 7
P181 with D.

Directors: Pierre Coffin, Chris Renaud, Sergio Pablos

Starring: Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Julie Andrews, Will Arnett, Kristen Wiig, Miranda Cosgrove, Dana Gaier, Elsie Fisher

Watching this film was truly a delightful experience because it's dubiously funny, free-spirited and well --very touching.

There's a lot of good things to talk about this film.

First, there's Gru - claiming to be a super villain (Steve Carell is genius!), how I love his accent! Gru is such a character to watch -- a very tender soul inside but a funny and kind of evil in a weird/ humorous way in person.

and then the Minions, they are just the cutest thing ever - they're funny, smart and dependable! LOL

There's the three orphan girls namely Margo, Edith and Agnes -- they're just so adorable!

There are tons of good scenes in this film but my favorite would have to be the part when they went to the Super Silly Fun Land and Gru got that Fluffy Unicorn toy for Agnes! It was just so hillarious!

I could watch this film a million times and still laugh and be moved by it. It's a perfect family movie!

I'd give a deserving 9 /10 ratings for this film.

The Last Exorcism Film Review

Eastwood Cinema 3
P181 with malcolm

Director: Daniel Stamm
Starring
Patrick Fabian
Iris Bahr
Louis Herthum
Ashley Bell

Last night my friend Malcolm and I were choosing to watch between Despicable Me and The Last Exorcism and we opted to watch the latter thinking that It'd only be release for a limited time. Just how we regretted choosing this film! It's probably one of the worst films I've seen in ages -- It's "Paranormal Activiy" gone bad.

What's so wrong about this film?

- The Trailer was way better than the film. You'd wish it was as short as the film's teaser.
- The film was trying too hard to scare with a little success. (meh-- because It ain't scary at all.)
positive?

There are a couple of startling scenes but that's just the consolation you would get from watching it. Actors were good specially the girl playing Nell (Ashley Bell)

Mamarazzi Film Review

SM Megamall Cinema 12
P160 with D

Director: Joel Lamangan

Starring
Eugene Domingo
John Lapus
Diether Ocampo
Carla Abellana
Andi Eigenmann
AJ Perez

I wasn't so keen to watch this film in the cinema but I figured that It would be a great pass time since it was top billed by Eugene Domingo. I was expecting to laugh from start to finish and I just did. The comedy isn't fresh at all but Eugene's take on acting is beyond amazing. She's a really, really funny and intelligent woman. It's not a smart film but it's a "fun" one. The only "annoying" or "anti-climactic" scene in the film was the dance sequence in the ice-skating rink. WTF was that?? It's so out of nowhere-- it's like audience were given 10 minutes break from the film to do what they want to do (pee, buy snacks, nap if you could). It was way off --so random, corny and uncomfortable.

John Lapus gave a very good support as well as Diether Ocampo and Carla Abellana. AJ Perez, Andi Eigenmann and Arron Villaflor are just eye candies in the film and they did that role --well, okay.

If you're looking for a good laugh, then you should catch this one. For good direction-- go catch Salt / Inception -- I think they're still showing.

I'd give it a 7.5/10 ratings.

Salt Film Review

Gateway Cinema 9

P171 with D.

Director: Phillip Noyce

Starring
Angelina Jolie as Evelyn Salt
Liev Schreiber
Chiwetel Ejiofor
August Diehl
Daniel Olbrychski

Watching Salt was like watching Step Up 3D minus the latter's bad acting. Yeah. I compared it to Step-Up because like the unbelievably amazing choreography of that film -- Salt takes action into another amazing unbelievable level! It's literally action-packed but not totally brutal to watch.

Plus. It's Angelina. It's like watching Wanted all over again. It's too fast-paced for me and I was so keen watching Angelina kick everyone's ass that I have totally forgotten the story. I'm not saying it's forgettable, the action sequences were just way too over the top. For some reasons, it kinda reminds me of the "transgenic" of the TV Series "Dark Angel" where kids were trained to be warriors.

So I'd say it is a mix of Step-Up 3D minus the acting, Wanted minus the story and "Dark Angel" minus the cloning. "Hit Girl" should hang out with Salt!

Ip Man 2 Film Review

SM Megamall Cinema 6
Premiere Night Invitation
August 16, 2010 - 7:30 PM
with D.

Director: Wilson Yip

Starring
Donnie Yen
Sammo Hung
Lynn Hung
Huang Xiaoming

You people reading this may already know Ip Man - 葉問 . He's considered the first Master of Chinese Martial Arts who taught Wing Tsun in mainland china (Foshan) and eventually settled in Hong Kong to teach the art.

Coming to the premiere, I actually just read some stuff about Ip Man and I don't have a lot of idea who he is. I just know that he's the master of Bruce Lee and that's just about it. I'm not really into martial arts films / chinese / asian films in particular but I enjoy a few every now and then. I have yet to see the first Ip Man which was release in 2008 so I just read the first film's plot on the internet.

The 2nd installment isn't that bad. I mean, I love the fight scenes specially the "initiation" of the Martial Arts Society with Ip. It was really funny and seeing Sammo Hung was just incredible. The movements of the arts are so precise that I couldn't help but be awestruck!

I just hate the fact that they have to dub the whole thing in English. I wish they just showed it with subtitle because It's a bit redundant and comical at times. Over-all, I did enjoy the film but won't suggest a second screening-- although, I'd definitely get it on DVD with the original lines with subtitles.

I'd give it a 6 / 10 ratings.

I'd like to thank PinoyExchange and SOLAR UIP for the invites.

Starring
Rick Malambri
Adam Sevani

Wow. That's the first word I've to say about the 3rd Step Up installment, Step Up 3D. Watching it is pure bliss --it is visually enticing and the choreography (effects) are freaking awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Never mind the acting department, because I didn't watch it to catch an Oscar winning performance. It is exciting and inspiring altogether. If you're an artist (a dancer in particular) -- this film would make you feel that YOU CAN ACTUALLY DO IT.

And if you're as good as these dancers in the film -- you're probably
BORN FROM A BOOM-BOX!

My favorite scene would have to be the 2nd round of the World Jam where the Pirates are battling against some Asian crew. The special effects are super cool. It's probably one the best highlights of the film (cause there are tons!) . I daresay that it's the best Step Up amongst the three films.

And one of the things I love about the film is its soundtrack. It's party- perfection!!!

Here are the songs used for the film's soundtrack.

1. Club Can't Handle Me-Flo Rida feat. David Guetta
2. My Own Step- Roscoe Dash and T-Pain feat. Fabo
3. This Instant (Sophia Fresh feat. T-Pain)
4.
Already Taken (Trey Songz)
5.
This Girl (Laza Morgan)
6.
Fancy Footwork (Chromeo)
7.
Up (Jesse McCartney feat. Dapo Torimiro)
8.
Freak (Estelle feat. Kardinal Offishall)
9.
Whatchadoin? (N.A.S.A. feat. M.I.A., Spank Rock, Santigold and Nick Zinner)
10.
Tear da Roof Off (Busta Rhymes)
11.
Move (If You Wanna) (Mims)
12.
Shawty Got Moves (Get Cool)
13.
Irresistible (Wisin Y Yandel)

a second viewing would be worth it!

I'd give it a 9.5/10 ratings!

Repertory Philippines Presents: Equus - Opening Night

I went to see the opening night of the widely talked-about "Equus" yesterday presented by the Repertory Philippines. I was with my friends from the Manila Standard Today, and we were given the best seats in the house played at OnStage in Greenbelt 1.

The play was directed by Audie Gemora and consisted of two acts. The first act was draggy. I felt exhausted after the first act, but I would like to commend the actors playing Dr. Martin Dysart (Miguel Faustmann) and Alan Strang (Red Concepcion) for they both delivered powerful performances.

After a 15 minutes break, Act 2 repeated the beginning of the play, and the audience is anxiously waiting (I could feel it) for the nude scenes. Lol. Act two was perfect as Concepcion started acting out flashbacks when Dr.Dysart gave him the "truth pill." It was a mesmerizing performance by Concepcion and Faustmann, who were on the stage throughout the play.
The set design was relatively blank and small, though; it's a dull combination of black and white and box and silhouettes.

Overall, I thought the casting was great, although I'd say that It was Faustmann who delivered the best of the night. I'd give it a 7 out of 10 ratings, and I encourage 18+ above people to watch it. It will run until July 25.

post scriptum

"Equus" will run from July 10, 16, 17, 23, and 24 also at 8 p.m.

Matinees at 3:30 p.m. are on July 10, 11, 17, 18, 24, 25.

Venue: Onstage, 2/F, at Greenbelt 1, Paseo de Roxas, Makati City.

44th Anniversary of The Beatles Infamous Manila Concert

Seemingly strange occurrences marked the circumstances surrounding the Beatles concert in Manila on July 4, 1966, the 44th year of which we are celebrating today. But when investigated considering the milieu, they turn out to be just madcap manifestations of the period's innocence and changing times. In this commemorative article, those circumstances are exposed to put them in correct perspective, enabling one to tell what really happened to John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr when they had a taste of Pinoy people and culture for three days. Panic over briefcases at the MIA runway. The Beatles briefcases contained their stock of herbal drug, particularly marijuana. By 1966, the Beatles have turned into potheads. The recreational chemical habit was introduced to them by Bob Dylan during their first meeting at the Hotel Del Monico in New York in 1964. When those briefcases were left unattended on the runway when they disembarked from the Cathay Pacific plane and speeded up to the press conference at the Manila Yacht Club along Dewey Blvd. (now Roxas Blvd.), the Beatles panicked! Neil Aspinall, in charge of transfer of those bags, snatched and loaded them in his service car, immediately following the speeding car that carried the Beatles. They knew drugs were illegal items in most countries, the act being out-and-out drug smuggling.

George stated in desperation, “This is it; we’re going to get busted.”

As it turned out, they were not apprehended as the illegal stuff was not detected. We had lax airport procedures back then, and the cache was not discovered. The Beatles sighed with relief when they reunited with their precious bags. This act, if apprehended, would have exposed them as drug users and most likely land them in jail. It was also a big public scandal since Queen Elizabeth inducted them as MBE (Members of the British Empire), thus being appropriately addressed with a “sir.” But the Beatles’ worst concern, of course, was that they would have had nothing to use for their recreational drug habit.

Araneta Coliseum or Rizal Memorial Football Stadium?

The twin concerts (one at 4 p.m. and the other at 8:30 p.m.) was held at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium in Vito Cruz St., Manila. No doubt the twin concert (one at 4 p.m. and the other at 8:30 p.m.) was held at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium in Vito Cruz St., Manila. Why then did some Beatles biographers erroneously identify Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City as the concert venue as the case of Bill Harry, who wrote thus in The Ringo Starr Encyclopedia? Poor research and/or bad knowledge of topography? The four-color lithographed stickers issued to promote the concert clearly indicated Araneta Colisuem as venue. That was because the concert was really planned to be held there but had to be transferred from the Big Dome to the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

Why the change? Because its 17,000-person capacity was not big enough for the expected attendance and since Araneta Coliseum has a strict ticketing system, it did not allow Brian Epstein, the Beatles’ business manager, his “brown bag” (more on this below). That was why the four-color promo stickers had to be changed with Rizal Memorial Football Stadium as venue.
Marooned at the Elizalde yacht.

The plane carrying the Beatles landed at the tarmac of the Manila International Airport on July 3 after five shows at the Nippon Budokan Hall in Tokyo, Japan from June 30 to July 2. They were given two shows on July 4 and would depart for India on July 5. Included in the entourage were Brian, press officer Tony Barrow, road managers Neil Aspinall and Mal Evans, tour organizer Vic Lewis, and goffer Alf Bickell.

As soon as the entourage got off the plane, members were whisked to the Manila Yacht Club for the customary arrival press conference. After which they were herded to Marina, the private yacht of Don Manolo Elizalde, off Manila’s south harbor. They were supposed to stay there during the duration of their stay for security reasons. But the problem was there were so many high society friends that Don Manolo brought there to party, bothering the Beatles, specially George, like pesky mosquitoes no end. The distraught Brian complained to the promoter Ramon Ramos. Ramon was with Cavalcade International Inc. which had previously brought Matt Monro, The Everly Brothers, Dave Clark 5, the Searchers, Shirley Bassey and Peter & Gordon to Manila. John, Paul, George and Ringo were moved to The Manila Hotel at 4 a.m. the following day, the concert day and hours before the supposed Malacanang Palace invitation.

The Beatles’ “snub” of Imelda

Theoretically speaking, the Beatles did not snub First Lady Imelda Romualdez Marcos’s invitation for an 11 a.m. luncheon at the Malacañang Palace on July 4. They were supposed to meet with the First Family (Pres. Ferdinand Marcos, First Lady Imelda Romualdez Marcos and their children Imee, Ferdinand, Jr., and Irene) plus 300 children of a motley of military and diplomatic personnel. Brian did not accept.

While the Beatles were still in Tokyo, Tony got an invitation to the Malacañang Palace from Ramon. Brian did not give an answer as the quartet usually did not attend such parties. What he did not know was that such an act would be considered rude in this hospitality-conscious country. The problem was complicated when Ramon took the silence as a confirmation of the invitation.

Expectation of the Beatles’ attendance at the Malacañang Palace was fomented when The Manila Times run the story the previous day. When Malacañang asked the Beatles to be picked up from the hotel when they failed to appear at the Palace, the Beatles and Brian were taken aback. When asked if they could make a quick drop at the Palace, Brian refused as John, George and Ringo were still in bed. Paul went to the financial district of Makati with Neil, aghast at the sight of the squatter colony in the shadow of the high-rises. He did not want to rouse the three up as they slept very late because of the Marina yacht to Manila Hotel transfer. The British ambassador advised Brian to reconsider his decision since the Beatles’ security was courtesy of Marcos. But Brian stood pat.

The local media quickly called the non-appearance as “snubbing” the First Lady, the Beatles getting the brunt of the Marcos friends and followers, fast at hatching a retaliation scheme.

Winner concerts

The 30,000 and 50,000 fans who attended the 4 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. performances, respectively, could not have been accommodated were they held at the Araneta Coliseum. Ticket priced at P20 for the field reserved section and P30 for the grandstand ringside section totaled $100,000 in sales for both concerts.
The two-part concert opened with the singing of the Philippine national anthem. This was followed by the overture with Eddie Reyes and D’Downbeats with the D’Cavalcade Dancers, Dale Adriatico, Wing Duo, Pilita Corrales, Lemons Three, Quartette (made up of Pilita and The Lemons Three) and The Reycard Duet as front acts. After the intermission, the Beatles started to play the same repertoire as the Japan concerts. The Beatles sang a total of 11 songs including Chuck Berry’s “Rock And Roll Music” and their original songs “She’s a Woman,” “If I Needed Someone,” “Day Tripper,” “Baby’s in Black,” “I Feel Fine,” “Yesterday,” “I Wanna Be Your Man,” “Nowhere Man,” “Paperback Writer” and “I’m Down.”

Happily, no snags took place during the concerts, that is, if the fans’ screaming overpowering the Beatles singing could not be considered a hitch. There were also complaints that the front act was unusually longer than the main act.

The airport lynching

Upon waking up on the morning of July 5, it immediately became obvious to the Beatles and their entourage that they have lost their security, and their lives started to be miserable. All of a sudden, breakfast orders were not served, cars were not available to transport them to the airport, escalators were not operating there, and they were getting pushed and screamed at like slaves in contrast to their original treatment as kings. The worst was being lynched. Alf Bickell was punched by a thug. Ringo dropped on the floor when boxed while Brian was struck on the face and sprained his ankle. Mal Evans was also hurt. Terrified, everybody had the common sense not to fight back. To avoid more injuries, the entourage sought cover behind civilians.

The Beatles plane held up

Once they were abroad KLM flight 62, Brian, Mal and Tony were asked to get off, clueless about the reason. As it turned out, they were asked to clear up a passport problem and declare income tax. Their passports were not stamped entry dates as required by our immigration laws. They also boarded without making an income declaration and paying the corresponding tax. Philippine Tax Authority’s Misael Vera would not make them leave without paying taxes. Brian issued a bond for $18,000 as payment. This delayed the flight by 40 minutes.

Brian’s brown bag

It was the practice of Brian to ask the concert promoter to place the quartet’s share of the undeclared income from ticket sales of such concert. It was a tax evasion scheme to increase earnings and an income tax reduction scheme in Britain. (Recall George Harrison’s “Taxman” song where he complained about the confiscatory nature of the British taxation system?) He asked such undeclared income to be placed in a brown paper bag (The Beatles’ anti-Brian song entitled “Baby, You’re a Rich Man” has a line that states “...in a big brown bag inside the zoo,” right?) which most of the time he or his assistant hand-carried to the plane upon departure.

Brian carried the concert’s brown bag upon boarding the KLM plane. The Beatles’ share of undeclared income was in the bag. John confirmed that the brown bag was confiscated and it was never accounted for. In 1971, the Beatles tried to retrieve the bag’s content officially, allegedly totalling $17,000, but nothing happened to the claim.

Victims of the Marcos ‘dictatorship’

Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos were not yet tagged as “dictators” as Ringo called them in the Beatles Anthology interviews. This is what happens when an incident is taken out of the milieu—a misinterpretation of history takes place. In 1966, Ferdinand and Imelda were well loved by the people, enjoying popular support. Their manner of working as political animals were pretty much not yet exposed in the same way the Beatles were not yet detected as drug users during that time. If only we recognized the Marcoses’ “inhospitable” habits could we have minimized the possibilities of Martial Law and the Ninoy Aquino assassination.

Dr. Timothy Leary is right in calling the Beatles “evolutionary agents sent by God.”
A Marcos conspiracy to kill the Beatles

Among the confidential documents retrieved from the Malacañang files when Marcos fled to Hawaii as a result of People Power were classified documents about a plot to kill the Beatles in India as a retaliatory move for snubbing Imelda. For 25,000 rupees, a driver would ram head on the American Cadillac the Beatles was in while on a sightseeing tour. Supposedly, Marcos eventually backed off the James Bond scheme before it was undertaken. His reason: He was attempting to develop good relations with Britain.
Bottomline

Mid-1966 was a particularly unsettling period for the Beatles. After the debacle that took place in Manila, the “more popular than Jesus” statement that John made to Datebook writer Maureen Cleeve months earlier was taken out of context by the American public. As a result, they were tagged as bigots, forcing John to make a public apology. But it was too late. Damage was done, particularly on the Beatles. This public relations trouble forced them to give up their last concert at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. These unfortunate turn of events forced the Beatles to stop touring as it has turned dangerous.

When they stopped touring and went into what’s generally referred to as “the studio years,” the Beatles entered into their maturity period, producing such albums as Revolver and Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band and the single “Strawberry Fields Forever” and “Penny Lane.” (By the way, Engelbert Humperdinck’s “Release Me” beat this double A-side single to the number one slot of the British music charts, forcing producer George Martin to pull them out of the planned Sgt. Peppers album.) Since members were no longer constantly together as touring entailed, it started their disintegration. John appeared in How I Won the War and started to be unhappy about being a Beatle member.

By inference, it was the Manila concert that forced the Beatles to re-form and reform, bringing them to their artistic peak. But it had a negative effect, which is, bringing them to the pit bottom of their professional career.
